Pop star Billie Eilish used her acceptance speech at the Music Innovator Award ceremony to deliver a pointed message to the wealthy — urging billionaires to give away their money.
“Love you all, but there’s a few people in here that have a lot more money than me,” Eilish said while on stage. “If you’re a billionaire, why are you a billionaire? No hate, but yeah, give your money away, shorties.”
According to attendees, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg was reportedly in the audience when the comment was made.
Eilish’s remarks drew applause from parts of the crowd, while others appeared surprised by the bold statement. The 22-year-old artist has frequently spoken about social responsibility and environmental causes throughout her career.
Her comments came shortly after it was revealed that Eilish donated $11.5 million from her recent world tour to various charitable causes, including climate change initiatives and youth mental health organizations.
Neither Zuckerberg nor event organizers have issued a response to Eilish’s remarks as of Thursday evening.
