WASHINGTON, D.C. — Former President Donald Trump reacted to news of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s retirement announcement, calling it a “great thing for America” and criticizing her record in Congress.
“She was evil, corrupt, and only focused on bad things for our country,” Trump said in a statement on Thursday. “I’m very honored she impeached me twice and failed miserably.”
Pelosi, who served more than three decades in Congress and was the first woman to hold the Speaker’s gavel, announced earlier this week that she will retire at the end of her current term.
Trump and Pelosi had a long and contentious political rivalry, marked by two impeachment trials during his presidency and public clashes over legislation and leadership.
While Pelosi has not responded directly to Trump’s comments, she said during her announcement that she was “deeply grateful” for her time in public service and that her decision to step down was made “with confidence in the future of our nation.”
