FRISCO, Texas — Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland, 24, was found dead early Tuesday morning after an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Frisco Police.
Dispatch audio obtained by TMZ revealed that Kneeland’s death followed what authorities described as a mental health episode. Police said they located his body inside a portable toilet following a pursuit.
According to the Frisco Police Department, officers were called after receiving reports that Kneeland’s girlfriend had received a concerning message from him stating that he planned to “end it all.”
Police said troopers had initially attempted to stop Kneeland’s vehicle before he evaded pursuit. “After losing visual of the vehicle, troopers located it minutes later, crashed on southbound Dallas Parkway near Warren Parkway,” the department said in a statement.
“Initial reports indicated that a male subject, later identified as 24-year-old Marshawn Kneeland of Plano, TX, fled the scene on foot,” police added. “Officers established a perimeter and initiated a search of the area with the assistance of the FPD K-9 and Drone units.”
At approximately 1:31 a.m., officers found Kneeland deceased with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Kneeland, a rookie defensive end, had recently gained attention for scoring a touchdown over the weekend in the Cowboys’ game against the Arizona Cardinals.
Authorities have not released further details, and the investigation remains ongoing.
