Former First Lady Michelle Obama said she has no intention of running for president, arguing that the country is not prepared to elect a woman to the nation’s highest office.
Obama made the comments during a conversation with actress Tracee Ellis Ross, who asked whether the cultural expectations placed on First Ladies affect public perceptions of women in leadership.
Ross began by asking Obama how she felt about the First Lady being considered an “archetype for wifedom and femininity.” Obama disagreed with the premise, saying she does not view the role that way.
Ross then asked whether those perceptions influence the space available for women to pursue the presidency. Obama responded bluntly.
“Don’t even look at me about running, because you all are lying. You’re not ready for a woman. So don’t waste my time,” Obama said. “We got a lot of growing up to do.”
Obama has repeatedly stated she has no interest in seeking elected office, despite speculation from supporters and political commentators. Her latest remarks reflect her belief that cultural barriers and voter attitudes still pose challenges for women seeking the presidency.
So far, Obama has not indicated any future political plans beyond advocacy and public initiatives.
