Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mikie Sherrill is facing criticism after referring to conservative activist Charlie Kirk as a “racist” and “misogynist” just days after his death.
During a televised debate on Tuesday, Republican opponent Jack Ciattarelli condemned Sherrill’s remarks, accusing her of politicizing the death of the Turning Point USA founder.
“She issued a statement condemning Charlie Kirk, calling him a misogynist and a racist,” Ciattarelli said during the exchange. “That kind of rhetoric divides this state when we should be focused on uniting it.”
Sherrill has not yet responded publicly to Ciattarelli’s comments.
Kirk, a prominent conservative commentator and founder of the youth organization Turning Point USA, was recently killed, prompting widespread reactions from across the political spectrum.
The debate, which took place at Montclair State University, marked a heated moment in the New Jersey gubernatorial race as both candidates sought to address state leadership and political civility in the wake of national controversy.
